MAPDON
(Medicinal & Aromatic Plant Database of Nepal)

MAPDON contains information on non-flowering (fungi, lichens, bryophytes and pteridophytes) and flowering plants (gymnosperms and angiosperms) of Nepal. The goal of the MAPDON is to provide a comprehensive database of the medicinal and aromatic plants of Nepal with emphasis on :

 

MAPDON: REPORT VIEW

Information on a particular species can be retrieved from the database in several formats as required. One of the formats is given below:

Nardostachys grandiflora DC. (VALERIANACEAE)
Synonyms: Nardostachys gracilis
Kitam., N. jatamansi DC., Valeriana jatamansii auct.

Vernacular names: Jataamasi, Bhutle (h6fdl;, e'Tn]), Na swaan (New.), Pang-poi (Tib.), Jataamaansi (San.), Spikenard (Eng.).

Description: An erect, perennial herb, 10-50 cm high; rhizome thick, aromatic, in clusters, densely covered by reddish brown hairs; leaves elliptic-lanceolate to spathulate; flowers white to purplish white, in  globose heads.

Habitat:  In rocky and open slopes of subalpine to alpine zones.

Distribution:  3200-5000 m (native); Himalaya (Garhwal to Bhutan), Xizang, W. China.

Conservation status: Appendix II (CITES), Vulnerable (IUCN), and HMG Nepal protected species.
Parts used
: Rhizome.

Ethnobotanical uses: Rhizome in piles, tonic; and as incense.

Pharmacological actions: Rhizome sedative, antiseptic, carminative, anticonvulsent, emmenagogne, diuretic, antispasmodic, hypotensive; useful in epilepsy, hysteria, insomnia, hypertension, convulsion, and cholera.

Chemical constituents: Rhizome contains volatile oil, jatamansone b-maoliene, seychellene, seychelane, norseychelanone, actinidine, nardostachone, jatamansic acid, and calarene.
