Life form/Habit:

Perennial herb

Habitat:

Sub alpine, alpine open slopes; moist humid conditions and shady shrubberies; and under conifer forest.

Description:

Perennial, shortly rhizomatous herb, 15-40 cm. Stems erect, unbranched, glabrous. Leaves usually 2, first deflexed, brownish,  petioles up to 20 cm, orbicular-reniform in outline, 6-15 x 3.5-10 cm; palmately divided into 3 ovate lobes, sometimes further lobed; acute, base cuneate, margins serrate, pubescent beneath. Flower solitary, bisexual, erect, white or pale pink, cup-shaped, 2-4 cm across; sepals 3, soon falling; petals 6, stamens 6. Fruit a large scarlet or reddish berry, ovoid, 2.5-5 cm, with many seeds embedded in pulp31,34.
