Perennial herbaceous climber.

Habitat:

On open dry slopes, moist and rocky places.

Description:

(Tuber much branched, surface rootlets many, flesh white). Stem twining to left, lacking prickles, bulbils few or absent. Plant glabrous. Leaves usually smaller,  alternate, triangular-ovate, abruptly acuminate to cuspidate, base cordate, 10-22 ´ 6-15.5cm, thinner textured. Inflorescence- branch leaves smaller ; petioles shorter than blades. Male infl : spikes on 2s and 3s, arranged along leafless branches or in axillary groups ; spikes 3-17cm, axis sharply angled, bearing 2-4- flowered clusters rather distant, absent from lower part of the filiform axis ; bract minute. Male flower : petals and sepals are similar, obliquely spreading, oblanceolate, apex rounded, pale brown, margin hyaline, 1.3 - 1.5 ´ 0.8-1mm ; pedicel short ; stamen 6, filaments 0.5-0.7mm, outwardly curved, anthers 0.1 ´ 0.2-0.3mm, transversely elongate, 2- lobed, downwardly directed. Female spikes borne singly in axils. Female flower : petals and sepals are similar to male but laeger (1.6-2 ´ 0.9-1mm) ; style 0.7-0.9mm, stout. Capsules reflexed, widely oblong-elliptic to oblong- obovate in outline, truncate or sometimes shallowly retuse, 1.8-2.5cm, wings 1.1-1.3cm wide. Seed c 0.6´ 0.4cm, +_oblong, surrounded by whitish wing, unequally wide (to 0.5cm) +_ elliptic in outline (Fl Of Bhutan, vol 3 part 1).

Macroscopic characters:

Outer surface of the rhizomes are greyish brown to buff colour, easily peel –anle and internal surface yellow; Outer surface with short, longitudinal fractures, rough in appearance, wrinkled with spiny projection – the fragments of the root (Rajbhandary and Ranjitkar 2006).

Chromosome number:

2n= 20 (Joshi and Joshi 2001)
